Slime by Alexios
Chouchoulas
Released 1995 |
Yes that's right, the date does say 1995! There are some people
out there still writing Oric games (don't ask me why). Slime is best
described as an action/strategy game. If any of you are as old as me
you may remember an old game called Mined Out by Quicksilva which
was released in the early 80's. Well, a good description of Slime
could well be Mined Out 2.
If your memory of Mined Out has put you off Slime already DON'T
GIVE UP SO QUICKLY! The aim of the game is to become an
environmental activist & destroy factories which are creating
toxic slime. I presume that the Environment Agency weren't up to the
job! All you have to do is to guide your little man through the
factory doors & he will do the rest. When a factory is
destroyed, it leaves behind rubble & slime. Occasionally objects
are found in the debris too. These may help or hinder. |

Sound easy? Well, one slight problem I forgot to mention is
that everywhere you go you leave a Tron's-Light-Cycles-like trail of
deadly slime yourself! Contact with the slime is deadly (how did you
guess?). This leaves the logical problem of how you actually manage
to leave a slime trail without dying, but there you go, you can't
have everything! A route to all factories & the exit therefore
has to be found which does not cross your path. There is further
hindrance on later levels from walls which cross parts of the play
area making careful planning more inportant than ever.
As I mentioned earlier there are some useful & not so useful
objects to be found in the factories. Sorry! But I am not going to
tell you about them - play the game! Alexios doesn't give many hints
away in the instructions so neither will I!
Quake 2 it ain't, but Slime is pretty good. It has certainly become
one of my favourite Oric titles. The sound & graphics are
simplistic but effective - I like the smoke from the chimneys &
the rippling slime. The real killer feature is the addictive
gameplay, helped on by some good humour. You just HAVE to clear a
screen to see what the next quote is or find out what new objects
do. A well thought out game & worth a look from anyone.
Slime is available as a virtual disc for Sedoric from the Oric
software archive (also run by Alexios) which can be reached from the
Oric web-ring. |
